Instagram is changing in 2026 faster than many brands realise. If you’re still working with a 2024 strategy, you’re losing visible reach right now – without knowing why. Here are the updates that really matter, including an honest look at what already applies in Europe and what’s still coming.
Anyone still focusing mainly on feed posts is already falling behind. The new navigation makes it clear where Instagram is directing its users – and where reach is created: directly in Reels and DMs.
Original content wins – repost accounts lose reach
Since late April 2026, Instagram has extended its original content protection to photos and carousels – not just Reels. Accounts that mainly share content they didn’t create themselves are no longer being recommended, in Explore, Feed and Discover. Instagram evaluates this on a rolling 30-day basis. Content counts as original if it was created by you or substantially transformed through genuine added value. A watermark or a new caption doesn’t count.
For tourism brands in DE, NL and FR, this means: simply reposting UGC now actively hurts reach. The solution is the Collab feature or purpose-made creator content.

Hashtags: maximum five
Since January 2026, hashtags are limited to five per post. More importantly: they no longer boost reach. The algorithm now reads caption keywords, on-screen text and audio – not tag lists. For multilingual accounts, this means: use German keywords in German captions, Dutch in Dutch ones. The language of the caption signals to the algorithm which audience you’re targeting.
Reach benchmarks 2026
According to an analysis by tool provider CreatorFlow (2.1 million posts, February 2026):
Smaller, specialised accounts perform better in percentage terms – a structural advantage for niche tourism profiles. Sprout Social confirms: Reels achieve the highest engagement rate of all formats at 2.46%.
Trial Reels: test before you publish
Trial Reels show content to non-followers only first – without it appearing on your grid. Since February 2026, they can also be scheduled in advance. According to Instagram, 40% of creators who’ve used Trial Reels use the format more regularly, and 80% of those see higher reach with non-followers. Ideal for seasonal campaigns or new content formats you want to test first.
Affiliate links in Reels
Europe note: This feature is currently live in the US, Brazil, India, Indonesia and Thailand. The rollout to all 22 Instagram Commerce markets has been announced for 2026 – DE, NL and FR not yet confirmed. Building your Meta Commerce catalogue now means you’ll be ready as soon as it arrives. |
In available markets, creators can tag up to 30 products directly in a Reel. Viewers tap, land on the product page and buy – without leaving the app. Creator content shifts from an awareness channel to a conversion channel. Already relevant for our markets is the disclosure requirement for #ads. Instagram’s own Partnership label often doesn’t meet national legal requirements.
AI Creator Labels – authenticity becomes more visible (in testing)
Since May 2026, Instagram has been testing an optional label for accounts that regularly publish AI-generated content. The message: real creators with real perspectives become formally more visible – and therefore more valuable. When selecting influencers for tourism campaigns, it’s worth factoring this in going forward.
